Earth is filled with amazing animals in every corner of the Earth. From frozen tundras to lush forests, and even the driest deserts, Mother Nature seems to always find a way to create life. Not only are animals making ways to survive in harsh environments, but they are also stealing our hearts. We know about the common cute cat and dog, but there are unbelievably adorable animals found all over the world that most people don’t know about.

- Quokka
The Quokka is known as being the “happiest animal” because of its unique facial structure, forming a cute smile. It mainly lives on an island in Western Australia called Rottnest Island, where there is dense vegetation for it to eat. It’s been called one of the friendliest animals because they have no natural predators. This makes them almost fearless, very social, and naturally curious! However, they are threatened by an almost 50% decline in population due to habitat destruction and climate change.

- Dumbo Octopus (Grimpoteuthis)
This adorable umbrella-like octopus has been given many nicknames over the years, such as “flapjack octopus”. Its name comes from the two fins that it uses to steer as they float across the ocean floor instead of propelling like other octopuses. They are found about 3,280 to 23,000 feet deep in the ocean, making them the deepest living octopuses. The Dumbo Octopus eats worms, small crustaceans, bivalves, and isopods that they find as they roam on the sea floor.

- Pygmy Marmoset
The Pygmy Marmoset is the smallest and one of the cutest monkeys in the world, growing only 4 to 6 inches. These “finger monkeys” have a unique ability to turn their heads 180 degrees and leap up to 16 feet on tree canopies. It’s found in the native rainforests of the western Amazon Basin in South America. These tiny monkeys eat tree sap, insects, fruits, and nectar in the wild. Deforestation and illegal pet trade have caused the population to decrease by 30% over the past three decades.

- Sea Bunny (Jorunna Parva)
The Sea Bunny is an adorable species of sea slug found in the Pacific Ocean. It earned its name from its special traits that make it look like a tiny bunny in the ocean. Its “ears” are sensory tentacles where “fur” is also tiny rods to detect food and mates. What looks like a fluffy tail is actually gills that they use to breathe! It usually grows to less than an inch, making it one of the smaller sea slugs. Despite looking like a stuffed animal, it is highly toxic to humans. This is because they consume toxic sponges and absorb their poison to defend against predators.
These animals are way too cute to lose, but things like climate change and pollution are putting these adorable animals in danger. While some of these animals on this list aren’t titled “at risk”, thousands of animals are endangered. The IUCN Red List says that over 48,600 species are at risk of extinction all over the world. If we don’t do something about this growing problem, animals as we know them will become extinct or close to extinction. As teens, it seems like we can’t do much about these global problems, but that isn’t true at all! Helping these animals doesn’t have to be a big act. It can be as little as recycling more or becoming a conscious consumer of what we buy.
