Who Is St. Patrick?
As many people already tend to know, this holiday originated in Ireland, and began as a religious feast honoring St. Patrick. But who really is St. Patrick? Well, unbeknownst to many people, he was actually born in Britain, not Ireland. His life was at most normal, until he turned 16, and was kidnapped and taken prisoner by Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate. He then spent 6 years in captivity. Because of his predicament, he turned to religion and became a devout Christian. After 6 years he managed to escape, and he then became a priest. After that he kept using christian ways in his teachings, and became the legendary patron saint who we know to be St. Patrick today.
How Did St. Patrick’s Day Come To Be?
St. Patrick is most definitely a well known figure in many parts of the world. But even knowing that, how did a saint that lived nearly 1,600 years ago get an entire holiday named after him? Well, the holiday originated in Ireland, even though St. Patrick was born British. And it started as a religious feast to honor his spirit. But slowly with more and more people from the U.S. coming and immigrating from Ireland, the somber tradition was turned into a joyous celebration of Irish heritage!
