The Remarkable History of Christmas Caroling!
Christmas caroling from door to door with family and friends has been a beloved holiday tradition for centuries. But where and how did this festive activity originate? This is the history of the tradition of Christmas caroling!
The Development of Modern Door to Door Caroling
Christmas caroling is said to have originated in 4th century Rome, but the tradition evolved into dancing to Christian hymns as a form of musical celebration in 14th century Europe. The modern tradition of door-to-door caroling gained great popularity during the 19th century Victorian era.
Pre-Christian Origins
Even before the development of Christianity, in early Pagan times, it was a common winter activity to dance in circles whilst singing cheerful tunes to celebrate the winter solstice. Another pagan holliday tradition, known as “wassailing”, involved singing cheerful songs for compensation of drinks or food. The tradition was even present during the Roman times before Christianity, in celebration of the Winter festival of Saturnalia.
The Dying Art of Door to Door Caroling
Christmas caroling from door-to-door has more or less developed into a dying tradition. There are many reasons for the decline of this once-beloved holiday tradition. With the pace of modern life, people have become more consumed with digital holiday entertainment and don’t have any desire to sing door-to-door! It is also much less common for communities to be open to connecting with each other in this way. This goes along with the fast pace of modern life, with the uprise in technology and new ways to socialize online, people aren’t connected in the way they used to be. Nonetheless, there are many other holiday activities that are gaining popularity that allow people to connect with each other and come together.
In conclusion, Christmas caroling’s remarkable history will remain a significant part in the origins of beloved Christmas traditions! Happy Holidays to all!
