Punxsutawney Phil The Famous Groundhog
Punxsutawney Phil is a famous groundhog who becomes famous every year on our very own Groundhogs Day! On this day, people look up to Phil to help predict the weather. He lives in a small town called Punxsutawney in Pennsylvania.
The tradition of Groundhog day started a long time ago, in Europe. People believed the weather on candlemas day could predict how long winter would last. Candlemas Day, celebrated on February 2, is a Christian feast day representing Jesus in the Temple and the purification of Mary 40 days after Christmas.
German immigrants brought this idea to America and used Groundhogs since they were common in Pennsylvania. The first official Groundhog Day with a groundhog was in 1887 Pennsylvania. A group called the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club made the groundhog the weather predictor. Since then it has become a fun tradition that lots of people follow every year.
Punxsutawney Phil is the groundhog who predicts the weather. Legend says he is over 100 years old because he drinks a special elixir, but really, many different groundhogs have played Phil over the years. Phil lives in a cozy burrow in the town and is a local celebrity.
Every year, people gather at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney to see Phil wake up from his burrow. Members of the Groundhog Club dress up in tuxedos and top hats for the big event. Even though Phil’s predictions are often wrong, people enjoy the tradition because it is definitely really fun and exciting!
Groundhog Day is more than a weather forecast. It is a fun tradition that has lasted for over a hundred years. Whether or not Phil is right, the celebration brings people together and gives everyone a reason to smile in the midst of winter.
