If you’re into bugs, then you’ve probably thought about having one as a pet. If you have and you’re really looking into getting one but don’t know which one to get, then this list is for you. These bugs are very interesting and make good pets for beginners. CAUTION: IF YOU DON’T LIKE BUGS, CLICK OFF!
- Praying Mantis

This one is perfect for beginners who’ve never had a bug as a pet before. It has no venom, is small, doesn’t require much care, and you don’t really need to go out of your way to get one. You can probably find one just at the park and take it home. It takes little food and it barely needs water. It is quite literally perfect for someone who hasn’t kept a bug as a pet before. It isn’t poisonous and you can handle it freely but with care.
- Vinegaroon

This is another very good bug to keep as a pet as it isn’t venomous, takes a little more care than a praying mantis. It does have a vinegar smelling gas that it shoots out similar to a skunk, but it only does it when it feels threatened. It hibernates for up to 6 months at a time which they spend mostly underground. They eat their prey by grabbing them with their claws and strangling them. They eat worms, millipedes, and small scorpions.
- Emperor Scorpion

Emperor scorpions are the biggest type of scorpion that you can legally own. It is often mistaken for the Asian Forest Scorpion which is smaller, has less bumpy claws and has more potent venom. The emperor scorpion does have venom, but it is very mild and feels almost like a bee sting. It can grow to from 6-8 inches but there have been reports of ones getting up to 9 inches.
- California Tiger Centepide

This one is for very experienced people in my opinion because it has (depending on the species and region) potentially deadly venom. It is fast, sneaky, and a criminal escape artist. It is up to 8 inches and has around 40 legs. It burrows in the sand and stays there for long periods of time. It’s been said to be like a snake for people who don’t like snakes. Its cousins in the east have been known to eat birds.
