“Ho Ho Ho” the words almost everyone in the world knows who they belong to, Santa! The jolly man that could make a crying child smile, but when you think about it, why him? Why the big guy who wears red with a huge beard who gives out toys. Well, the guy who Santa is inspired by looks just like him and is the base for Santa. Soon you will learn about this man who was the reason the magic Santa was started.
The Original Santa
Santa wasn’t always there, before Santa didn’t exist. In the beginning, it was Saint Nicholas who was the reason Santa became alive. In about the 3rd century in Patara or modern day Turkey, the monk Saint Nicholas was known for his kindness. He gave all his wealth to the sick and poor. He has also saved 3 poor sisters from being sold into slavery. All of these actions have proven his kindness to people and soon name him the protector of children and sailors. He soon passed on December 6, which became his feast day.
The Reason He Became Santa
The action that caused St. Nicholas to inspire Santa is when he helped the 3 sisters and their father escape from poverty. When St. Nicholas learned that the family was poor, he decided to assist them in his own way. He did what Santa Claus does every christmas eve, give them presents. He snuck in the middle of the night and filled the sisters’ stockings with bags of gold. He continued performing these generous acts, especially to children and sailors who needed it the most. This soon influenced our modern idea of Santa as a gift giver.
Things That Boosted Santa’s Popularity
Santa would not have been as well liked today without lots of things. One of the things that made Santa’s fame rise is Coca-Cola’s art in 1931. The company Coca-Cola hired an artist named Haddon Sundblom to create a series of illustrations based on the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” The art soon created an image of Santa being a friendly guy to many people. Another thing that boosted Santa’s popularity is many films and TV shows. Shows like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town helped Santa Claus become a staple in American households for Christmas.
Conclusion
Santa has soon become the man that most people know and love. Every culture has different versions of Santa. Not all of them look the same, but they all are the kind man that helps everyone he can and brings christmas joy to all!
