From Ancient Myths to Halloween Frights

Have you ever walked through a scary place on Halloween night? Your heart racing, knowing something is about to scare you? Yep, you’re in a haunted house, and it’s one of the weirdest, most fun traditions ever! But have you ever wondered why we even have haunted houses? Or where they came from? Let’s take a journey through the creepy cool history of this Halloween tradition!
Believe it or not but these beliefs go way back, like ancient times back. Thousands of years ago, in places like Rome, Egypt, and Greece, people believed that ghosts were real, and that they could come back to haunt the living. There were even stories written about haunted houses.
One of the first ghost stories was written by a Roman author named Pliny the Younger, 2000 years ago. His book described an abandoned home, in which a chain rattling ghost with chains would roam in. This book was like the OG horror haunted house story.
Later on during the middle ages, people believed that if someone died in a violent way, like on a battleground, their spirits would hang around in nearby buildings to do unfinished business. These thoughts stuck around for many centuries. Later on, these ideas also boomed in gothic literature, during the 1700s.
Now fast forward to the 1900s. When movies came along, haunted houses started popping up on the big screen. During this time is when ideas of how to make haunted houses creepier, and cooler exploded.
A couple years later, during the great depression in the 1930s, kids started going out of control on Halloween, and it soon became a huge problem. To fix this, parents began organizing homemade haunted houses to entertain kids and prevent them from causing any more mischief.
By the 1960s, haunted houses went from homemade to big attractions. In 1969, Disneyland introduced the Haunted Mansion. It was filled with all kinds of spooky stuff that just blew people’s minds away.
Haunted houses have gone from ancient myths to one of the best Halloween frights you get on Halloween night. Whether it’s full of horror, or just small jump scares, haunted houses always get you hyped up to face your fears, and have fun as well. Also if you are ever in a haunted house, frightened and excited at the same time, just remember that it’s a part of a tradition centuries old, full of fear, fun, and mystery.
