First invented in 1975 by Steve Sasson, digital cameras didn’t become popular until the 1990s and 2000s. With the rising interest and popularity of Y2K, digital cameras have been rediscovered and added to the list of returning trends.
How did Digital Cameras Come Back into Trend?
In recent years, the “Y2K” aesthetic has been a popular topic among Gen Z. Popular trends from 20 years ago are coming back like low-rise pants, cargo pants, and tube tops. This could play a major role in the rise of these cameras.
Well, what is the “Y2K” aesthetic? In recent years, especially during quarantine, TikTok has brought back the nostalgic feel and trends of the 2000s. Now, many of the things that we wear now and have grown to love are recycled trends from the 1990s and 2000s.
Nostalgia?
Nostalgia: “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.” Teenagers may find digital cameras to give a sense of nostalgia. This nostalgia may come from their parent’s childhood, or provide a throwback to their childhood. The overall “vibe” just screams “The Good Old Days”.
Decorating
Whether it’s a cheap camera from Amazon or a splurge worth the money, there has also been an uprising interest in decorating these nostalgic cameras. You can see these cameras decorated with cute and fun stickers.
