Middle Schoolers have had iPads for decades. Most elementary schoolers count down the time until they get to receive their Chromebooks. However, here’s the twist: 7th graders now have iPads! At the beginning of the 2024/2025 semester, they had to say goodbye to their Chromebooks and get iPads, which the school told them they would keep up to high school. But are iPads all that better? Let’s look at some pros and cons of each!
Chromebooks
Chromebooks are laptops made by Google that are very popular with the TVUSD district. They are similar to windows in design. Our 6th and 8th graders use them for assignments and schoolwork.
Chromebook Pros
Chromebooks have much bigger keyboards than iPads and much longer battery life. They are also easier to use for computer users who use computers often. And they are more durable. They are better for Windows/Google fans and cheaper to repair.
iPads
iPads are tablets created by Apple that are mainly used in elementary schools. They feature a design similar to iPhones. Our 7th graders have just received them to do their schoolwork!
iPad Pros
iPads have a touchscreen, meaning many people who prefer tablets will like iPads better. Apple fans will also be happy, since iPads are an Apple product. It’s also better for watching videos, since the screen is better quality, and it’s easier to log into your iPad. You can also use a specialized crayon to draw on!
What do students think?
We went to a lot of classrooms and a total of 87 students were interviewed. Out of that, 34 preferred iPads and 53 preferred Chromebooks. This means 39% of TMS students prefer iPads and 61% Chromebooks. We also got some individual students’ thoughts.
Steven Stratton, 7th Grade
I like Chromebooks better because they have longer battery life and durability.
Drake Sutton, 7th Grade
I like Chromebooks better because they have better battery life and are a lot faster.
Jonah Huffmire, 7th Grade
I like iPads because they have a touchscreen and are easier to use.
