What is A.I.?
Artificial Intelligence, or A.I. for short, is a technology that enables machines and computers to simulate human learning, comprehension, decision-making, and creativity. A.I. first took the world by storm in 2023. However, since then, it has improved dramatically and continues to get better every day. One very popular model of a type of A.I., called generative A.I., which is like a chatbot, is ChatGPT. Made and developed by the company OpenAi, ChatGPT can solve math problems, write essays, generate images, and more. Tasks that would take hours for humans can be done in a matter of seconds! However, is it getting too good?
Is A.I. Getting Too Good?
There are three types of Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Narrow Intelligence, or ANI for short, is designed to do specific tasks. Some examples include Alexa, self-driving cars, and streaming platforms such as Netflix that give personalized recommendations harnessing the power of ANI. The second level, which has not been reached yet, is called Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI. AGI wants to perform intellectual tasks in a way a human could. It also isn’t limited to one field, like self-driving cars, and can be used everywhere. Lastly, and perhaps the most important, is Artificial Super Intelligence, or ASI. ASI operates at a level above human intelligence. It is capable of outsmarting even the smartest people in every field. It could solve the world’s biggest problems, like climate change, in minutes. However, some people fear that it could become so powerful, it could become a threat to humans.

Are We Safe?
Sam Altman, the CEO of the parent company of ChatGPT, OpenAI, is confident that he will be able to reach Artificial General Intelligence in 2025. However, experts say that AGI won’t come suddenly, rather, it will slowly evolve with time. While AGI would likely have a huge impact on our lives, Artificial Super Intelligence could have the power to wipe us out. The reason is that once AGI achieves human-level intelligence, it could grow at an exponential rate. Locked in a race against time, scientists must ensure that we properly align our interests with ASI. If we don’t, we might just be cooked. If ASI becomes exponentially smarter than humans, it could wipe us out before we have time to read this article.
Conclusion
While ASI might not look like 20th-century sci-fi movies, it is fascinating, interesting, and scary. Some experts predict that it might arrive as soon as 2027 while others predict 2035. In the meantime, however, humans still have skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and most importantly, emotions. What do you think makes a person human? Leave a comment below!
