You saw the title and might be asking, what’s so crazy happening in 2025? Well, if you haven’t heard, this year has already been wild with many not-so-natural disasters, including diseases, fires, and snowstorms.
To start with 2025, the LA fires broke out, killing 23 people and ruining many lives. Its maximum size was about 37 square miles or 23,000 acres. In comparison, a regulation-sized football field is 1.32 acres. Imagine that and multiply it by 17,000! It’s pretty hard to imagine. But this situation is very serious. Put yourself in the shoes of someone whose house just burned down. It could be extremely difficult to find somewhere to stay. Approximately 75,000 people have ended up homeless because of the fires.
Another topic is the 2025 snowstorm in the Southeastern United States. The unusual weather so far in 2025 has completely left people wondering what is happening. Reaching record-breaking temperatures, 10 deaths have been reported due to the cold and accidents from slippery roads. Though many people don’t take these natural hazards seriously, they can be extremely dangerous. About 70% of snow-related accidents occur in vehicles.
It gets even crazier with a new virus outbreak. Although not as severe as COVID-19, which occurred in 2020, it can still be deadly. The name of it is HMPV, which has an 18% mortality rate (a measure of the number of deaths in a specific period). Though technically not new, having been discovered in 2001, it has grown in recent years and can cause pneumonia.
To cap it all off this month, the ban on TikTok, which outraged millions of users in the U.S., was recently lifted within 24 hours. But why was it banned in the first place? The government thought that TikTok was being used to spy on and manipulate the people of America. So they banned it, but why was it unbanned so quickly? The government was also concerned that the TikTok corporation, ByteDance, might leak government information, prompting the swift lifting of the ban.
