Have you ever been asked, “what is your favorite color?” Most of us have. Did you know ‘ your favorite color can tell the other person so much about you? Keep in mind that the personalities of each color are not 100% accurate. It is just an overview of what each color’s personalities are, because, yes, color’s have personalities too.
Let’s start with red. Red is 12% of the population’s favorite color. Red’s positive symbolizations are passion assertiveness, ambition, boldness, and energeticness. The negative symbolizations are impatience, anger, danger, aggression, and desperation. The first fun fact about the color red is that it can attract more attention than any other color. Another fun fact is that red has the longest wavelengths meaning it appears closer than it is. Also, did you know that wearing red can make you appear more attractive?
Next, let’s talk about orange. 3% of the population chooses orange as their favorite color. Orange symbolizes warmth, kindness, joy, optimism, and happiness. Orange can also mean arrogance, pride, selfishness, immaturity, and insensitivity. Which came first? The color or the fruit? I’m sure we all thought about it at some point. Turns out, orange wasn’t even a color until the fruit was brought to England in 1512. Also, did you know that orange can help our mind focus better?
The next color is pink. Pink is 5% of the population’s favorite color. It symbolizes softness, femininity, love, innocence, sweetness, delicacy, and vulnerability. However, pink can also symbolize naivety, fragility, weakness, soft-heartedness, and sensitivity. Pink is one of the most controversial colors out there because these characteristics are taken advantage of all the time which makes it seem weak. Pink is often used in preschools, and nurseries because it is a very calming color. Pink can actually lower your guard by a lot both physically and mentally. Scientists conducted research and realized that pink isn’t actually a real color. When we claim we see pink, we are actually seeing red and violet together.
Now, let’s talk about the most loved color blue. Blue represents serenity, stability, strength, resilience, and reliability. Blue can also represent coldness, insensitivity, rigidness, and unforgiving. 31.5% of people say blue is their favorite color. Another fun fact is blue is the rarest color in nature. Crayola build the world’s biggest crayon named “Bluetiful.” The reason why they made blue out of every other color is because blue is so loved and won in the vote of which color crayon to build. It is 1,502 pounds and 17 feet tall!
Purple is the third most loved color with 13.5% of people claiming it is their favorite color. Purple is often associated with royalty, luxury, power, elegance, and wealth. It can also be associated with pride, judgement, sadness, jealousy, and selfishness. Purple is associated with so much wealth because in the past, purple dye was expensive and only available for wealthy people. Purple dye was made with snail mucus. Also, the dye Tyrian purple is the most rarest and expensive dye in the world. It is more expensive than gold and was almost forgotten in ancient Egypt.
The second most loved color is green. Green is commonly associated with calmness, nature, growth, health, and vitality. However, this positive color also has some negative associations such as envy, greed, selfishness, and judgmental. A riveting fact is an experiment where students were given the same exact test questions but one paper was red and the other is green. Turns out, students who received a green test paper on average got better scores than students who received red papers. This is because green is a much easier color on the eye compared to red since it is associated with safety and red is associated with danger.
Yellow is the bright and vibrant color with 4% of people choosing it as their favorite color. Yellow symbolizes happiness, sunshine, positivity, and hope. It can also symbolise cowardness, egotism, betrayal, and caution as yellow is often associated with yellow lights and warning signs. Another reason why someone may dislike yellow is because many people get annoyed when surrounded by yellow. Yellow may also come of as confrontational. However, yellow is a beautiful color with many positive energy and associations too.
Now let’s talk about one of the most disliked color, white. White represents purity, cleanliness, innocence, symplicity, and perfection. It also have some negative associations such as grieve, death, boredom, and plain. Greeks believed wearing white to white to bed will bring them good dreams. White is the color of most religions since it symbolizes the cleanliness and purity of most religions.
Last but not least, let’s talk about another quite controversial color, black. Black can symbolize confidence, power, assertiveness, and strength. It can also give off villian vibes or evilness, death, sadness, and solemnity. Black is the first color used by ancient people in cave arts. Also, both the Greeks and Egyptians believed that black symbolized the underworld or afterlife.
Colors have many meanings and play a very important role in psychology and sociology but are often overlooked and underestimated. Reading this article can give you a basic understanding of color psychology but there is so much more to them. Learning about colors and their psychology can be beneficial to your interactions. However, it is also important not to judge people based on their favourite colour though. After all, these are just colors and they can’t define who you are as an overall person.
