Homework may seem good for us kids, and yeah, it is! But of course, as typical teens would, we all hate it. Let’s face it, every one of us probably had some sort of stress over homework overload. But, surprisingly, that won’t be for long!
You may think that the reason that homework is stressful is because of the teacher or the subject, but you’d be surprised to hear that it was created as a punishment for “bad” students originally. But later, people realized that it could help students. The problem is, over time, people have given students so much homework that it causes stress and hours of working with no time to play. This is why, after taking surveys with many students, California passed a law on limiting homework, which we shall call the Healthy Homework Act. The Healthy Homework Act has been passed out of effort to reduce the stress that students have over homework. And after realizing how much homework has affected us, good and bad, California started surveying students! According to New California law aims to reduce homework burden on students, an article written by Eytan Wallace, “The new law comes as a survey of more than 300,000 American students conducted by Stanford University and the nonprofit organization Challenge Success found that 45% of students say workload and homework is their number one source of stress” (Wallace, 6). This shows that homework could’ve been the source of your stress all along.
Of course, homework is good for us, but too much can be an issue. Wallace also states the date that this law will be mandatory: “The legislation calls for the California Department of Education to put homework guidelines on its website for the upcoming year. It also requires school districts to come up with a homework policy by the start of the 2027 school year” (Wallace, 10). This shows that we will be getting homework limits some time soon!
So yeah! Homework will be reduced soon, but not just yet. You might see differences in your amount of homework if you pay attention over time. If you observe the homework that your teachers are assigning, you might see that the school is making progress in the act of assigning less homework! Some classes are already stopping iReady homework!
In conclusion, homework is going to be minimized by 2027. This may seem like a while, but it will all be worth it! Just remember to be patient, because soon, our stress levels will go down phenomenally!
