ASB Who?
The Associated Student Body (ASB) is an organization of students who collaborate to prepare events and fun student activities for the whole school. You can’t spell TMS without a bit of excitement and fun! Mrs. Cardinale is the teacher who runs the group. The ASB program has been running for about 20 years and has been under Kelsey Cardinale’s care for the past 4 years. This group is a necessary part of our TMS team.
The ASB’s efforts are put towards the flyers you see while walking through the hallways in school for spirit days. They put in work and personal time to set up the talent show, or a gathering event just for all of you. They are the people who put together the parties and fairs to celebrate every student to feel included and celebrated. These students willingly joined to give you a spark of happiness throughout these tough middle school years.
ASB wants every year to feel special. Their main goal is to improve our middle school experience. They want to simply help TMS be the absolute BEST school it could be! They deserve all the attention for all the elbow grease they put into TMS events and planning. Let’s take a look at their thoughts, opinions, and event planning processes & more!
Kelsey Cardinale: Temecula Middle School’s P.E. teacher and the director of our Associated Student Body.
What is ASB’s main goal?
“ASB’s main goal is to improve the overall climate and culture of our school. What that means is that we try to find a way for everyone to feel included and seen and overall just want to come to school.”
What made you want to be a part of TMS’s ASB team?
“The thing I love most about my job is connecting with my students… I love making connections and finding ways to get to know my students. I just really like to have fun in general!”
“I want to make them all feel loved and connected.”
What type of events does the ASB crew plan?
“We do everything from student and staff recognition stuff, like student of the month, staff awards. Then as far as events we do like the after-school dances and parties. I run the big end-of-the-year field trips for each grade. We plan spirit weeks for red ribbon and because nice matters week…trying to cause awareness to say ‘hey let’s all be kind’”
“All events and all recognition.”
In 5 words how would you describe this club’s main role?
“Make all students feel welcome”
What do you think the kids like the most about this club?
“They really love to be together and [then] they also love getting out to the rest of the school and making things fun for everybody like the events or the lunch activities. They really love to see the kids having fun.”
What celebrations do you do in ASB for yourselves?
“We do field trips and leadership training. We also celebrate each other’s accomplishments, so whether it’s sports-related, birthdays, good grades…we try to celebrate each other. The kids do all the planning. They’re in charge of planning the team building activities…they do their own speeches on things like peer pressure and self-care and things like that…they pretty much run everything…their confidence grows so much in ASB…they become leaders.”
What is your event process?
“So we start with brainstorming ideas, of themes, dates, and then once we have a theme idea and a date, we’ll start coming with what kids would like… they come up with what would be fun and then we go from there and we just keep on building on the decorations and how we are going to promote the activity.”
“Brainstorm, date ideas, themes and then we start building from there.”
