Making Tennis History
Emma Raducanu proved that you can achieve your dreams, and earn $2.5 million dollars, even when you’re a teenager. She is only 18-years-old, but she won the women’s US Open! On September 11, 2021, Raducanu (representing the United Kingdom) won every single set against her opponent, 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez. It’s the first time in more than 20 years that it’s been exclusively teens playing in the final. What other accomplishments did this incredible tennis player achieve?
What is the US Open?
The US Open, also known as the United States Open Tennis Championships, is the fourth and final major tournament that makes up the tennis Grand Slam. (The other tournaments in the Grand Slam are the Australian Open, the French Open, and the Wimbledon Championships.) The US Open happens in late August and early September for two weeks. It has five championship categories: men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.
Raducanu started playing tennis when she was five years old. She’s earned a lot of accomplishments since then. Raducanu began her professional tennis career in 2018 when she competed in the Wimbledon Grand Slam event. By reaching the third round there, she became the first British woman to make it that far since 2002. (She had to pull out of the competition in round four because of breathing problems.)
Emma Raducanu entered the US Open ranked 150th in the world, but by the time she left, Raducanu was ranked 23rd. She’s also the youngest player to win a Grand Slam tournament since 2004. Additionally, she’s the first woman to win a title in her second appearance at a Grand Slam. As you can see, Emma Raducanu is a very skilled tennis player!
