Top 5 Christmas Movies That Have Nothing to Do with Christmas

Samantha Dos Santos

Winter is an amazing time to sit down next to the fire and watch some movies, and if you celebrate Christmas it’s fun to watch Christmas movies. But technically some of the Christmas movies we watch aren’t really Christmas-themed at all. Here are some of them.

DISCLAIMER: Spoilers for any movies on this list

1) Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp is a perfect movie to watch with your pets, but not many people remember that there were scenes at the beginning and end of the film that were centered around Christmas. The Darlings (Lady’s owners) got Lady on Christmas and the end has all the main characters gathering by a Christmas tree. However because this movie isn’t primarily set during Christmas time, it doesn’t count as a Christmas movie.

2) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

People don’t normally think of Harry Potter as a Christmas movie and often forget the scenes that are during Christmas. There are very few but the Christmas scenes that are there have some interesting character development for Harry and show that he likes Hogwarts better than his other home. There isn’t  enough of any holiday to count it as a holiday movie, so it doesn’t count as one.

3) Star Wars Holiday Special

If you don’t know what this is you’re lucky. Needless to say, this is not the best Star Wars film out there. The whole movie is about Chewbacca trying to get back to his family for a holiday called Life Day. That’s right, Chewbacca has a wife and a child. This has NOTHING to do with Christmas or any real holiday at all. And yet it’s still labeled as a Christmas movie to some people. Fun fact: this is the first time we see Boba Fett in any Star Wars media.

4) Iron Man 3

When you think of Christmas you usually don’t think of a group of terrorists that turn out to be actors. This is the primary reason why this movie isn’t a Christmas movie. The whole plot has nothing to do with Christmas, and if it took place during any other time it would  practically be the exact same movie.

5)  Gremlins

This might be a bit controversial but it’s true. Gremlins is not a Christmas movie. All it is is tiny creatures called Gremlins getting into mischief on Christmas. One of the main character’s dad also died on Christmas as well. The Gremlins reeking havoc could have happened on any other holiday and have the same plot and message.
